What is a Google Core Update?
A Google core update is a significant, broad change to Google’s search ranking algorithms and systems, released several times a year to improve the overall quality and relevance of results. Core updates don’t target specific sites, but rankings can shift noticeably as content is reassessed.
More About Google Core Updates
Each core update changes how Google’s ranking systems judge content, and the effects can reach across the whole web. A page that ranks well today can slip after a core update even when nothing on the site changed, because the update reassessed everything competing for the same queries.
Google releases core updates several times a year, per Google Search Central, and confirms each one publicly. Three shipped in 2025 (March 13, June 30, and December 11), and two have shipped so far in 2026 (March 27 and May 21). They are the broadest of the algorithm updates Google makes.
How core updates work
Core updates are broad changes to Google’s main ranking algorithms and systems. They don’t target specific sites, pages, or topics; instead, Google reassesses content overall to keep pace as the web changes. Google compares it to refreshing a ranked list: as strong new candidates appear, entries near the top can slide down without anything being wrong with them.
That’s why a core-update drop is not a verdict on your site. It means Google’s systems judged other content more helpful for those queries right now, and pages can regain ground as their content improves or in later updates.
Tracking rollouts on the Search Status Dashboard
Google confirms each core update on its Search Status Dashboard, once when the rollout begins and again when it completes. It doesn’t announce updates in advance, and its guidance on what an update targets stays general rather than update-specific. When traffic moves and you suspect an update, the dashboard’s ranking history is where to check the dates.
Core updates typically take one to three weeks to finish rolling out. The March 2026 update completed in just over 12 days and December 2025 took 18, while the longest on record, the March 2024 core update, ran 45 days. Rankings can swing the whole time: during that 45-day rollout, positions fluctuated for over six weeks before settling, which is why Google tells site owners to wait until an update finishes before judging its impact.
Core updates vs. other Google updates
Not every ranking change is a core update. Google’s changes come in three sizes:

- Core updates: broad changes to the main ranking systems, released several times a year. They affect many sites at once and don’t single anything out.
- Targeted updates: changes aimed at one specific area, like the June 2026 spam update or the November 2023 reviews update. Google names and dates these on the dashboard too.
- Everyday changes: small improvements that ship constantly with no announcement. Google launched 4,781 changes to Search in 2023, more than 10 per day on average.
What to do after a core update
Don’t hunt for a penalty; there isn’t one, and Google says there’s no specific fix to apply. Confirm on the dashboard that the rollout has finished, wait at least a full week, and then compare your traffic in Google Search Console against the period before the update began. If the loss holds, the way back is making the content genuinely more helpful, measured against Google’s people-first content questions. Our guide to what to do when Google releases an algorithm update walks through that assessment step by step.
Frequently Asked Questions
- No. Core updates don’t target specific sites or individual pages, so a drop reflects Google’s broad reassessment of content, not an action against you. An actual penalty appears in Google Search Console’s Manual actions report; a core update never shows up there.
- Usually not. Google says most sites don’t need to worry about core updates and may not even notice one has happened. There’s no pre-update checklist to run; publishing genuinely helpful, people-first content is the preparation.
- As of August 2026, the May 2026 core update, which began on May 21 and finished rolling out in just under 12 days. Google posts each new one on its Search Status Dashboard, so check there for anything more recent.
